Identifing a 1863

Posted by Neal Hammill on Tuesday, 22 June 2010, at 2:52 p.m.

Dick, I have an 1863 side plate with a 1870 Allin's second version. I measured the length of the barrel by placing the cleaning rod all the way in to with the trap door locked closed. The barrel measured 30 inches exactly using that method. The Don has a 16 inch bayonet that goes over the site and twists to lock on with a sheath and brass emblem with a leather belt loop to secure it to one's belt. I sent to you a few pictures and I am trying to figure if the gun is a combination of left over parts or if it is an altered factory production. Also, I am trying to find a fair value on the gun as I intend to sell it to settle my grandmother's estate! Can anyone out there give me some additional information?

Thank you, Neal
