M1866 Serial Numbers and JB mark

Posted by Loren Dame on Sunday, 20 June 2010, at 5:52 p.m.

I have in my possession what I believe to be a M1866 Springfield .50/.70 caliber Allin conversion. It has 1864 on the lock plate and 1866 on the receiver. It also has, what I believe, is an inspection initial JB on the left side of the barrel. I cannot locate a serial number, either on the barrel or receiver. Was this gun assembled at the SA??? Does the lack of serial number indicate it was not intended to be issued to regular army and was placed with national guard troops or Indian scouts working for the military ??? 55-15/16" overall length / Barrel length to trap door break is 36-5/8". Any assistance in identifying this piece would be appreciated.
