I do not know the answer to that question.

Certainly LBH was THE driving force behind adoption of the rods, and the attendant required modifications, as ultimately manifested in the Model 1877 Carbine - with Spencer-inspired butt trap.

But, this now seems headed directly towards theorizing on the legitimacy of the so-called "Winchester" sliding trap. A "trap", nay a veritable morass, indeed, since diametrically conflicting opinions are passionately argued, both ways.
