Another possibility - the rifles have clearly been stored vertically without covering, for a LONG LONG time. The dust build-up is staggering. That COULD be affecting the appearance of the crown. However, I would SWEAR that I can see "flats" on the side rails of the M1901 rear sight in at least one picture. Of course, the genuine BoOF sight lacks these - its' sides are simple unbroken inclined planes. The graduations are different too, but that cannot be seen in those pics.
Some very "interesting" stuff, and, more shows up every day. I only wish his descriptions were more accurate, and knowledgeable. In my opinion, he is only parroting from notes, some of which are obviously NOT correct at all, and hypothesizing as he goes.
Since this ISthe "Forager" thread, I have been in contact with the seller of the "other" one, and it is absolutely NOT correct, at all. At best, it is one of the old commercial alterations by Bannerman, Sears, et al.
