Model 1873 questions

Posted by Patrick Murray on Sunday, 23 May 2010, at 11:15 a.m.

Hi, I have a model 1873 Springfield with the number 3339XX (I think it puts it about 1886). My question is, Were these ever arsnal refinished (I read someplace that a lot were about 1900)? Mine has a like new blue/black finish. But in spots I can see slight pits (door hinge pin mostly). All the markings are sharp and clear and not buffed out. The man I got it from said the gun was his Great Grandfathers,or Grandfathers service gun. I think the stock was sanded as there is no 'P' or inspectors stamps, but it looks like a unit stamp on the buttstock. PC G B 25 If pictures will help I can send some. Thanks for any imformation you can give me. Patrick Murray
