H & R / springfield 1873 trapdoor

Posted by Lynn Elliott on Wednesday, 19 May 2010, at 12:20 p.m.

I have a Harrington and Richardson manufactured rifle marked model 1873 with the Springfield name on the side plate. It has a spr 8 on the barrell which i believe may be the production number or production run. It is 45/70 caliber. I was "told" that it is a remake, but was also "told" most of the parts are genuine springfield that were discovered in a storage armory by H & R and then used in the production of these rifles. The person called it a "Buffalo rifle". I can tell that the trapdoor and end butt are different than the rest of the metal. Any suggestions as to how i might obtain any information on this rifle? Thanks for your help. Lynn Elliott
