Re: Pete, Burnside Carbine

Hi Bob,

Interestingly, what made me think about getting a Burnside (other than my related Rhode Island historical heritage) was the fact that last December when I was visiting our younger son in Richmonmd (Glen Allen) at Christmas once the 12-inch snowfall had been cleared we drove into Richmond and visited the Museum of the Confederacy and then the Jefferson Davis Residence and finally the old Tredegar Iron Cannon Foundry where there were several .54-Caliber Burnsides. Mine ran me about $1,600.00 (a pretty decent 5th Model) and I saw one a couple of weeks ago on another militaria WebSite somewhat nicer (better case-hardening/bluing and cartouches) for about $4,500.00. That made the $35.00 I had paid in 1956 in a gunshop in Fall River, Massachusetts for a "totally-minty" one seem like the bargain of the century. Dixie Gun Works recently had a couple in their inventory that weren't bad - - but weren't cheap either. I'm afraid that the "bargain basement days" of yesteryear are over.

Best,

PETE
