I once sent off to Frank Mallory for information on my 98 Krag rifle #172986. Frank sent me the entire list of every Krag, along with mine, that'd been issued to the 26th U.S. Volunteer Infantry on July 15th, 1899 just before they shipped off to the Philipines. I even received the list of rifles, by number, within every numbered shipping crate. From that information, I learned that rifle 171117, which I also owned, and rifle 172986, which I inherited from my grandfather, were shipped from Springfield Arsenal together in the very same crate! Anyway, having the com;oete list of every rifle in the unit, I could see that there were certainly gaps in the sequence of serial numbers. There were runs of occassional consecutive numbers of rifles that were issued to the 26th, but then there'd be gaps, large and small on through the list. Where those other rifles were issued is anyones guess, but they sure were scattered among other units.
