No practical reason of which I am aware. If it was the original stepped sight, one reason might have been because the graduations could have been read more conveniently, by a right-handed shooter.

However, that would not apply to the later M1877 and 1879 sights, because their graduations had been moved to the left side - for that very reason. AFAIK, in those times, all soldiers were expected to shoot from the right shoulder, whether or not they were left-handed.
