Re: Samuel W. Porter signature
Posted by Pete Nelson on Sunday, 2 May 2010, at 4:07 p.m., in response to Re: Samuel W. Porter signature, posted by John on Friday, 30 April 2010, at 11:32 p.m.
The only thing of any possible substance I have to offer to you is the rather ornate and quite clear signature of "Sam'l. Porter, Master Armorer" following the tag-line "Respectfully Submitted to the Commanding Officer" atb the bottom of his "RACAPITULATION OF INSPECTION REPORT UPON ONE-HUNDRED AND THIRTY-NINE CADET RIFLES, CAL. 50, MODEL 1869, RECEIVED FROM AMHERST COLLEGE" which is dated "NATIONAL ARMORY, Feb'y. 26th, 1884", a copy of which report was furnished to me by former Chief Researcher Charles W. Pate along with the SRS Serial Number Letter dated May 13, 2006, prepared on my Model 1869, Type I, Springfield Cadet Rifle S/N 473. In a separate file I had put together on the National Armory some time ago in a packet of information furnished to me by the Connecticult Valley Historical Society which listed several organizations and political offices held by Mr. Porter including that of "Common Alderman" in one Ward (which escapes me at the moment) of the City of Springfield). So there are probably a number of documents in their files which would probably contain his signature. Based upon that summary Inspection Report, his signature is a rather dintinctive one. In comparing the "S.W.P." characters in his signature, there are some similarities between them and those used in his cartouche [as shown on pages 110-111 of the article "EARLY DATED CARTOUCHES" included in VOLUME-3, ISSUE-2 (WINTER, 2001) of Al's TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD NEWSLETTER. But, as you suggested, it may simply be the stampmaker following the penmanship trends of the day.
Since my old reliable H-P Model 1350 Printer/Copier/Scanner has just destroyed itself, perhaps I could get fellow gun-collector John at our local MAIL & COPY PLUS store to FAX a copy of the signature to you if you would post your FAX number here in the Discussion Board (or E-Mail it to me at email@example.com).
