This is anecdotal, but in the early 1960's I met a fellow at an Illinois gun show who had a nice assortmant of .50 cal. trapdoors for sale. We got into a discussion about the M1868's with 1868-dated blocks. He claimed to have one with a serial number in the low 120's. I made some notes, but lost them. My recollection is that it was 122 or 123. I don't believe there was any reason for this guy to be "shining me on" about this. He seemed honest.

Not anecdotal was my "thrilling" experience of handling Graham Burnside's M1868 SN86. That gun was the subject of an article or two. I wonder what happened to that rifle.
