Just received my first Trapdoor!

Posted by daveboy on Monday, 26 April 2010, at 3:34 p.m.

Just opened the box and removed my first Trapdoor. I knew nothing about these rifles a few months ago, but have been reading all I can. Will post some pics as soon as I get her cleaned up. So far, I am pretty happy. Here is what I know (I think):

It is an 1888 model with the rod bayonet. S/N 556144. Everything looks to be in good shape, nice patina on metal, no rust. I assume the wood has been refinished as it is shiny and the P is present but no inspector's cartouche. The bayonet appears to have had the tip ground back about 1/4", I suppose to blunt it. I assume the bayonets tip came to a sharp point? The rear sight is not the Bannerman sight. It is a buckhorn type that flips up for elevation, no windage adjustment. Is this correct? Looks like it has been there forever. The bore looks great. I look forward to making some smoke!
