That's a strange one. Are you SURE it isn't a cadet rifle (29-5/8" barrel)? Those ARE known with JSA cartouches, I have an "1895", and have seen pictures of "1897" and "1901", but not (IIRC!) "1896".

That serial number is too low to have originally been a rod-bayonet, but SA DID modify 1800 standard rifles to cadet size in 1895, and an unknown number later.
