1873 US Springfield trapdoor

Posted by Bill on Monday, 1 February 2010, at 3:42 p.m.

I have a 1873 US Springfield trapdoor serial number 22726 that is in what is called attic condition. It is rusty (dry light to medium) not pitted. It is also missing the rear sight, cleaning rod and the upper part of the stock is broken, cracked. Should I leave it as it is in its original condition or should I clean it up and replace missing parts? I prefer firearms with history. Thank you for any suggestions. Bill
