Jim, after taking all the hardware off of the stock a good washing with hot water, course sponge, and Murphy's Oil Soap will clean most of the crude/BP off the stock without damaging it, rinse, wipe, and allow to dry. It works for antique refinishers. Then re-oil after it dries or even use a carnuba/beeswax afterwards. Regarding the iron, I generally use a rag soaked in WD40, then wipe off the excess, doesn't seem to change the patina one bit.
