Re: 1873 springfield carbine

The Sixth received its arms early on and was transferred from Kansas and the Indian Territory in 1875, to Arizona, trading places with the Fifth, if memory serves me. The Fifth, in turn, was transferred from Kansas and the I.T. in the summer of 1876, as reenforments after the Custer debacle. I have to go through my records to see when Crook left Arizona for the Dept. of the Platte, but I doubt that the 6th served under Crook until the later Apache campaigns.

Without digging into my micrcofilm on the 6th's ordnance returns for 1873-1875, I remember that Company E, at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation, I.T., received its arms in either the last quarter of 1874 or the first quarter of 1875. Some books document the quarter, so don't rely on my memory!
