Re: 1873 springfield carbine

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Thursday, 17 December 2009, at 4:59 p.m., in response to 1873 springfield carbine, posted by graves, robert on Thursday, 17 December 2009, at 9:41 a.m.

I recorded that arm in July of 2008, when it was for sale at "A-gun". And, I believe it was discussed here at that time. My notes reflect that the front sight was possibly not correct, but that it otherwise seemed OK. The arm is almost surely a genuine carbine, since few, if any, rifles were made right at the start. FWIW (which is, as John said, not a great deal) #171 has the same attribution.

The hardest thing to verify is the property stamping - so very few guns were marked that we have little to go on as to comparison of style, etc. Of course, a 6th Cav stamping has a MUCH MUCH greater chance of being "real" than ANYthing marked "7th Cav" which is highly suspect from the git-go! :-)
