Re: Model 1873 identification

Posted by Dick Hosmer on Wednesday, 2 December 2009, at 2:14 p.m., in response to Model 1873 identification, posted by Jack Higgins on Wednesday, 2 December 2009, at 1:56 p.m.

"Someone" (NOT SA!) cut the stock, probably to use the rifle for hunting. Is there any evidence of a block of metal ever having been brazed to the bottom of the barrel, a couple of inches behind the muzzle?

Since the buttstock has a trap, it was once on a rod-bayonet rifle, And, in that serial number range, it COULD have been one of the rare ones. All moot now, but interesting. The trap would have held a M1879 screwdriver, a rod tip, and a headless shell extractor.
