Model 1873 identification

Posted by Jack Higgins on Wednesday, 2 December 2009, at 1:56 p.m.

I recently acquired a trapdoor Model 1873 rifle SN 318267. This has the standard 32 5/8 in barrel but with a short [approx 33 in] stock with a single barrel band. The section before the band is groved to take a cleaning rod but the rod is missing. The stock butt is heavily inletted to accept a rod and likely other cleaning materials. There are no proofs, checkering or marks of any kind on the stock. The barrel has the usual proofs - PVPeagleheadP.Is this original issue or more likely did someone try to "sporterize" the rifle by adding a short stock ? Any comments would be appreciated. Jack H
