Chris- It is almost certain from your description that you have one of the extremely rare and desirable Model 1884 rod bayonet models.
Go to the main page of this site and scroll way down to the Brief Model Descriptions and Values block, and click on the link for the M1884 rod bayonet model. Look VERY CAREFULLY at the photo and note the location of the front sight which is just above the front of the latch mechanism, not halfway to the muzzle as with the common M1888 Rod Bayonet model. Also, the M1884 has a hood around the front sight that is partially cut into the latch mechanism. Most of the M1888 rifles do not have hoods, but some do, and they are well forward of the latch mechanism.
The best news is the value for the M1884 is significant, and the $4,000-12,000 range listed (depending on condition) is pretty accurate. Comparable condition M1888 rod bayonet rifles only bring $1,000-2,000, so you have a definite WINNER!
Most trapdoor collector wait years or decades to find one of these, and you start off with one! I would be happy to adopt it for my collection, as would many other people here.
