1884 trapdoor accuracy

Posted by Steve Applegate on Thursday, 19 November 2009, at 4:52 p.m.

Maybe somebody out there can help me.

I just started reloading for my trapdoor cadet model. I am pouring .457 soft lead bullets, 340 grain. I shoot 58.7 grains of 2F. I get about 6" groups at 25 yds and about 24" groups at 50 yds. The bore gets so clogged with carbon or unignited powder that I can't shoot more than about four rounds without completely cleaning the barrel. My reloading manual calls for a .460 caliper bullet. Is the .457 small enough that it isn't engaging the rifling?

Can anybody recommend a black powder loading that is proven. I am using large rifle primers, should I try large magnum?

Thanks, Steve Applegate
