What model is this rifle & other ?'s

Posted by Jay Brower on Monday, 2 November 2009, at 5:15 p.m.

I recently purchased a trapdoor rifle at an auction. I don't know a whole lot about them and am a bit confused about a few things.

#1, the breechblock is marked as an 1873 model, but the S/N is #385664 which I believe means it was manufactured in 1887. Wouldn't that make this an 1884 model and therefore wouldn't an 1884 breechblock be "correct" for it?

#2: it had no rear sights when I bought it (I knew this when I bid). I have stuck a spare Buffington rear sight on it but it shoots something like 2' too high at 50 yards. Would an 1879 rear sight be more "correct" for this rifle and be likely to bring the elevation down?

TIA
