Back from gunsmith,now for ammo

Posted by DOUGLAS on Friday, 16 October 2009, at 8:14 p.m.

The rifle is back.New original parts include firing pin, extractor. It has a high arch bolt with nice case hardening. The gunsmith could find no trace of screw holes for a rear sight either. He did give the rifle a clean bill of health to shoot black powder rounds.I have shot plenty of muzzle loaders, originals and reproductions but not a black powder cartridge arm.My thought is to buy some brass, bullets or a mould, primers and a Lee type loader. I have loaded many other types of rounds with those types of loaders. But, so many questions. Will a Lee Loader work? What type of primer is best?Should I use black powder or pyrodex? What is the best bullet to use?Should it be bees wax lubed?Paper patched? What kind of brass is best?New or used? How much powder?I would like to shoot this old iron before any other work begins on the cosmetics. Maybe I should just try and buy a few rounds first.Who makes a black powder cartridge for the 45/70?What is safe in a high arch trapdoor?I thank again the gentlemen who have been helpful with past information and look forward to further thoughts from folks who know more about Trapdoor Springfields. And there is no rear sight, yet.
