Re: 1889 Springfield

Possibly one of the rifles that was cut down for a "fencing musket" (bayonet practice rifle as a substitute for the M1903 Springfield) that someone has fiddled with to return to firing condition?

Look carefully at the right side of the barrel near the muzzle- are there a pair of holes about 1/2" and 3 1/2" from the muzzle?
