What does the * after a SN mean

Posted by Mike Wright on Wednesday, 19 August 2009, at 2:58 p.m.

Hi, I'm considering purchasing a Trapdoor carbine SN 175822*. The * after the SN confuses me. I've read conflicting explinations as to what the * after the SN is for. Some say a rebuild at SA and others say a new receiver. The carbine in question has a 1881 cartouch, and a circle P on the stock. Appears to be correct stock as it does not have a hole or plug at the tip as a cut down rifle stock would have. It has a Buffington rear sight properly marked C on the base and ladder. It also has a trap butplate and the inside stock looks correct with the 3 holes, middle one being bigger, all nice and neat. Has a nice saddle ring and bar. Does this sound like an original carbine? Does anyone know for sure what the * represents? Thanks, Mike
