You need to figure out if it is a MODEL 1842 which was made from 1844 until about 1855; or Is it DATED 1842, which would make it a Model 1840?

If a Model 1840,it was originally flintlock, but nearly all were converted to percussion, and values will vary greatly depending on which it is. Of course, man of the ones converted to percussion were later "reconverted" to flintlock to fill collector demand, and those are worth a lot less than an original flintlock.
