Re: Springfield Trapdoor Serial Number

That would seem to be one of the 500 Cadets manufactured during the 1st quarter of 1875. A couple of other serials in the 32-38K range have been reported, but no data is available for that particular number.

HOWEVER - and regular readers know how conservative I am - since that WAS the first run of the new Cadet Rifle, it is not unreasonable to suppose that it may have gone to West Point (many later Cadets went elsewhere, as the USMA did not consume the entire 22,000+ which were ultimately produced).

The date on the swivel is the date of the patent for the stacking swivel. Cadets should not have SLING swivels, of course, and the preceding M1869 had NO swivels at all.
