A couple of years ago I acquired a piece that went through similar metamorphosis. The guy that sold it to me thought it was a beat up reproduction but I was interested in it as a donor for a sporter project I was working on. When I finally saw it I realized under all of the modified surfaces lurked a usable '79 rifle. At some point in its life the trigger assembly, barrel bands and butt plate were entirely covered in brass welding rod and crudely filed to shape. The rear sight was also removed. I was able to resurface the butt plate but the barrel bands and trigger assembly had to be replaced because the sling swivel had been ground off and the trigger assembly was too badly altered. All in all it was worth the $60 I paid for it. $250 in parts put it back in factory, usable, trim. My guess is it was used by some reenactment troop or movie studio, but who knows. In retrospect, I should probably have left it alone as it may have had a unique history of its own. THOP
