My initial post was not meant as any sort of put-down, just some wonderment as to the hope for such exactness, in the face of what I have learned are pretty much insurmountable odds.
BTW, as one not deeply knowledgeable on 1903s - does the M-Y barrel code indicate date of assembly of rifle, or production of barrel? I would THINK the latter, but am not certain.
Summing the RCOs should give a reasonbly accurate total of arms produced, but does not address, beyond a reasonable progression of expectations (sometimes confirmed by physical changes on the numbered part) just how those arms are numbered.
