1877 "parts" carbine

Posted by walter r estabrook on Sunday, 10 May 2009, at 2:19 p.m.

Recently acquired an 1877 carbine with plugged rod channel & cartuoche"SWP1890". Cut down 1884 stock? Barrel/action appears correct-has Spr M1873 block stamp, thin breech, ser#90948. Carbine rear sight &proper front sight. No date on lock plate (US Spr.marked) solid butt plate, no door. Has rifle band w/groove for Buff. sight leaf( easily changed?) Exc. bore, should be good shooter. Could this be a Bannerman gun? Patina suggests that was done long ago,not recently assembled. Inletting for oval sling bar escutcheons appears perfect- was probably changed from round per rifle stock. I`d appreciate any comments.
