I think you might have missed one of the more obvious perps - Hollywood!

I know of no "repros" of the 1884 Rifles. H&R made 1000+ 1873 rifles in the 1970s, but no one would ever confuse them with an original, as they are DEEPLY stamped with the H&R markings.

So, if the parts are genuine, under the mistreatment, then it is just a real piece which has seen hard times. In this case, careful refinishing (something I usually do not suggest) would seem in order, unless there is some personal sentimental reason to keep it as received.
