Real or Repro M84 Rifle

Posted by Jeff on Sunday, 10 May 2009, at 1:46 a.m.

I've inherited a number of rifles. One of them is a Springfield 1884 rifle. After doing some research, I still can't quite determine if it is a repro or just a "special" one. The different thing about it is that the buttplate, trigger guard, swivels and barrel bands are a definite gold color. It has no cartouche and a very light V E P markings on the barrel. There is no "color" on any of the steel parts. The stock is a dark purplish. The model designation both on the trapdoor and the lock side and visible, but worn.

I can only imagine this was some sort of ceremonial/display rifle or a repro with fancy coloring. Or I suppose someone just thought it would look "cool" to paint them gold.. I'd appreciate any insight into what I might have here!
