Well, I think we are being asked to follow a red herring here. I'm almost positive that the cut, rather than representing something done FOR the gun, actually indicates something done TO the gun!

I think someone either cut out a worse fault, or, wanted a walnut patch for something else. The cut is sloppy, assymetric, undermines the integrity of the tang bed, and the "two tiny holes" make NO sense whatsoever, UNLESS they were for pins to stabilize a repair that was never installed.

The Indian scout story is 100% pixie-dust - to be paid NO heed at all..
