1884 Cadet

Posted by Tom McDonald on Friday, 20 March 2009, at 11:58 a.m.

I am just starting on the path of 45-70. I am a Black powder old gun shooter with two .58cal's one a two band Enfield and one Cooks and Brothers. I have gotten hold of a fine Cadet manufactured in 1883. I've done research and so far everything is going well. I am headed down to Austin this weekend for the Saxet gun show to look around and scope out things. My plans are to put some rounds down range next week once the ammo I have ordered comes in. Now this is were I need you guys out there help. I have ordered GOEX 405 Grn 1250FPS BP ammo which is below the I believe 1400FPS standard. The rifleing is crisp and no signs of any rust or pitting, breachblock is tight and extractor working good. I have not seen any signs of a blow back or gas leak so that tells me I might be able to go up th max FPS correct? I am planning on doing my own reloading once I return from the DIRT PIT (Iraq) so the shooters recipe's are interesting. Anyway any help out there would be greatly appreciated.
