Re: hollow base bullets

Posted by Larry Gibson on Tuesday, 17 March 2009, at 4:02 p.m., in response to hollow base bullets, posted by Dick NieKamp on Sunday, 15 March 2009, at 9:22 a.m.

The hollow base was used the regulate the weight of the bullet while maintaining the same outside dimensions. This fact is referrenced on most original "plates" of the bullets in manuals. i believe Wolf's book has the "plates" also. The 405 gr bullet has a more pronounced HB than the 500 gr dished HB. The HBs are not intended to obturate into the rifling ala a minie bullet but are there simply to regulate the weight as mentioned. You'll notice the skirt of the 405 gr bullet is too thick to obturate like a minie's.
