Re: need info on firing procedure

Well you're in luck. You can't close or open the breech with the hammer down. However it is a bad idea to have the hammer down on a loaded round since this will have the firing pin resting on the primer under mainspring tension. Also a 50-70 should have a two notch tumbler, not three. That is hammer full down, half cock, full cock.

Loading: Hammer at halfcock, open breech, insert round and close breech. Do not lower the hammer past halfcock with a two notch tumbler! Pull hammer to full cock, take aim and fire. If you decide not to shoot you can lower the hammer to half cock, just don't slip! I tend to open the breech before lowering to half just in case the thumb slips. The thumb piece will prevent the hammer from hitting the firing pin. Oh yes, keep your trigger finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
