John's point was one I had not considered; somehow I had it in my mind that you were referring to the cartouche, since MANY carbines are found with "1881" and "1882", neither of which should exist.

Due to the "star issue" reliance on numbers is really not too accurate, in that range. So, it DOES boil down to - does the arm look undisturbed?

Hope you got it for nearer $1000, and that you enjoy it! Here in northern CA we see horrible jumbles for $1500, and more, all the time.
