Question for Mr Hosmer

Posted by Edmund Blesch on Tuesday, 24 February 2009, at 9:02 a.m.

This probably got lost in the noise at the Trapdoor forum...

I have a shot of my Model 1866:

The photo of the '66 on this site shows a fairly bright finish to the lockplate and hammer. In your book, I believe you refer to the finish of these as case hardened. Now mine is pretty dark. Does this typically happen naturally to case hardened metal, or does this look like it's been blued?

Although you can't see it here, the barrel has a light pitting along the surface with the bright showing through. The part under the stock and even under the barrel bands look rather pristine, though.

Thanks

Ed
