Properly identify Springfield

Posted by Gene Stephens on Monday, 23 February 2009, at 6:38 p.m.

I have a trapdoor Springfield that has 1873 stamped on the trapdoor. Serial number is 220945. There is a VP (some kind of figure) and then a P on the barrel. They are stacked on top of each other as to form a vertical line. There is a stamp on the stock just to the left of the hammer. Kind of light and hard to make out but it is rectangular in shape with the corners of the rectangle rounded. Any way to make the stamp on the stock more visible? Is this really an 1873 Springfield or is it a later model?

(New Springfield trapdoor owner, but lots of old muzzle loaders)
