The diameter of the bullet may be important in your rifle as it most likely has to bump up on firing to engage the rifling. Springfields tend to have large groove diameters in the .460" range and most cast bullets fall into the .458" range. "Bumping up" seems to work best with soft bullets and black powder as it gives a sudden kick in the pants to the bullet that smokeless doesn't seem to do. For your relatively "lightweight" 405 I'd recommend trying 59gr FFg compressed to allow seating the bullet for a firm crimp over the front band. This is close to the carbine load from the arsenal. The crimp seems to help the bullet "bump up". If this doesn't give some degree of accuracy you'll likely need a softer or larger diameter bullet or both.
