Thanks for following up. Just goes to show there is (usually) a rational answer to everything! :-)

OK - so he had once referenced that gun, but did not own it. Doesn't that leave us short a serial number - did you not remember him having two carbines?

Can you shed ANY light on WHY he thought 37857 was issued to the 7th, to the exclusion of all other regiments? Other than falling well below the cut-off (ca. 48000) I know of nothing "special" about that number - it not even being part of a statistical "concentration" of other 7th Cav arms.

As far as I know the testing was mainly of fring pin impressions on fired cases, not so much (if at all) on bullets. Perhaps someone else has contact info for the parties I mentioned - I do not.
