Need reloading advice

Posted by Charly Busey on Sunday, 22 February 2009, at 6:13 p.m.

I am going to be reloading for my 1873 trapdoor rifle using a soft lead 405 grain flatpoint bullet. I am on a budget so I really need to use powders that I currently have (3031, 4227, blue dot, 3fg black powder, 3fg pyrodex). I know that you do not know the condition of my rifle, my skill etc so i know it is use at my own risk - but any advice would be helpful. I just went on the hodgens site and for trapdoors they had a starting load of 45 grains 3031 which seems incredibly high to me as my old Lymans manual had a starting load for a jacketed 405 grain as 34 grains 30301.
