Strange indeed! All I have are my grandfather's notes, and his writing of "U.S. Springfield Carbine #36451" and "U.S. Springfield Carbine #37857" are VERY legible. I am POSITIVE that the number he wrote could not be any other number. I will have my family look at the guns themselves to verify, as well as give me a better description (or pictures) of the indian markings. I believe there are tacks, but there may be other things, also. The last time I saw the guns was about 17 years ago. But even more strange, perhaps, is that below his description of the OTHER number is, "probable Custer Carbine".
