Well, if there is no number, it COULD be an 1870 receiver, as they were not serialed.

Is the top rear surface dead flat ALL the way across, or does it "round down" gently at each end? Are the cuts, and front edge of block below the hinge square-cornered or rounded? That change took place at 96300, ca. Oct. 1878, which will give us a starting point, assuming it is an 1873 receiver which has had the number removed for some reason.
