1873 carbine serial number

Posted by Jim Dellaira on Wednesday, 18 February 2009, at 8:05 p.m.

I have just found a 22" bbl carbine. The top is marked U.S. Model 1873. The right sideplate is marked U.S. Springfield. The trigger is grooved and checkered at the bottom. The buttplate does not have a compartment for tools and is marked US on the top. The stock has a single band with a swivel. No rear swivel. The barrel is stamped with a V over P over an eagle head. It has a flat long range sight. The question that I have is why are there no numbers of any kind anywhere that I can find? Were any 1873 carbines produced with no serial numbers?
