The rifle appears to be a standard Model 1868 Rifle, as made in 1870. Caliber is .50-70. They were originally finished (mostly) bright, so a good application of WD40 and 0000 or 000 steel wool should help a lot. There are a couple of M1868s listed at www.gunbroker.com, so you could compare condition vs. asking price. In good condition, many people enjoy shooting them from the shoulder.
