The number is certainly "in range" as a probable, even likely, carbine - the question is, how original is the arm today? I (still) cannot find any notes, nor recall why I think I've heard that number before. It is not in my registry.

Speaking of which, I again encourage ALL readers to let me know of any privately-held genuine 1873 carbines (UNDER s/n 50,000 ONLY) of which they are aware. All info is held confidential. The list has now topped 1000, but that includes some "questionables", and a few known fakes which I am tracking. Well over half now are NOT SRS-related. SOME sort of basic number listing (no citations) is still planned for the second half of my book, now expected in 2010.
