Good morning, James,
In checking through the 4 volumes of the SRS Serial Number Archives I did not find your specific S/N 36245, but i would fit right in in a series of 36000-series numbers in VOLUMES 1, 2, and 3 which are all "73C" Model 1873 carbines (i.e., 36189, 36191, 36269, 36365, 36577, 36758, etc. The "dates of reference" were a mixed bag between 1879 and 1883, and they were associated with a number of Cavalry Troops such as "3RD CAV, "FT SIDNEY NEB", "TRP B 7th CAV", TRP I 2ND CAV", "5TH CAV (TRPS N, D, F, M, etc". There was also one carbne (S/N 36120) listed three times in 1876 as having been used in "SA tEST OF RIFLE AMMO", "TEST OF RIFLE AMMO IN CARBINE", and "SA WIN. 73 RIFLE TRIAL".
That is not much to go on, but hopefully Dick Hosmer may have something listed in his roster of early carbines. And it does appear to have a chance of being a legitimate carbine S/N.
