I have always had good luck using Formby's furniture (finish restorer/remover?) It will dissolve the lacquer and remove it without removing any wood or raising any markings, and leaves a fairly decent looking "old" finish. Easy to use, just follow the instructions on the can with some 0000 steel wool. Probably available at most places where paint type stuff is sold. Use the linseed/lemon oil process mentioned earlier when done.

Good foragers are fairly scarce as they were not well cared for in service, and the small number made seem to have been worn out in service or by their new owners after being sold as surplus.
