Re: Forager from my grandfather

Thanks for the reply, Dick. Now that you tell me what the stock marking says I can read it :) It's in script, so hard to make out with the other dings in the stock...

I don't see a "2" anywhere, but there is still some lacquer on the lock plate that I haven't stripped off yet. Is there a particular place I should look for it (like on top, inside, on the side of the plate, etc)?

One thing I didn't mention is that it looks like there is some sort of stamp into the wood just behind the trigger guard. I can't read it. It's a circular marking about 1/2" in diameter. It may have a script letter or something inside it, but I really can't tell. The circle looks too "circular" to be an accidental ding. There also could be a charater or two stamped between the circle and the trigger guard. It could be a "J" and maybe a "B" or a "E", or it could be absolutely nothing and just a couple of dings. Are these "dings" or do they mean something to you?

Also, the butt plate has 2 screws in it. One is on the rear (where you'd place the butt against your shoulder). Is this where the wooden dowel is supposed to be, or is this screw just to hold on the butt plate? The other screw is on the top of the butt plate with "US" stamped right above it. Not sure if that means anything either.

What do you think? Thanks again for your help!
